The Thermie
Programme was a
five-year program running from 1990 to 1994 with approximately
150 million ECU available every year to promote energy
technology in four areas: rational use of energy; renewable
energy sources; solid fuels; and hydrocarbons. The OPET (Organisations
for the Promotion of Energy Technology) Network was a Thermie initiative.
The successor to Thermie, known as the
Thermie-Joule Program had the following objectives: to reduce
the environmental impact of energy use and to carry out research
into renewable energy sources and fossil
fuels. It consisted of research activities and demonstration
activities.
The
OPET Network (see below) is an
initiative of the European Commission that began its life in the
late 1980s. Its aim is to promote the benefits of tomorrow's
innovative energy technologies (with the exception of Nuclear
energy). The current initiative marks a new and challenging
chapter in its history as it continues to disseminate knowledge
and stimulate technology implementation, establishing itself as
a cornerstone in the building of a European Energy Policy
Research Area. |

Energy Technology Data
Exchange
The Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDE) is an
international consortium and a program of the International
Energy Agency (IEA). ETDE provides a comprehensive bibliographic
database that announces energy-related research and development
information. The Exchange, as it is also known, is a central
collection point of over 3 million scientific and technical
citations from its member countries, cooperating international
organizations, and the U.S. Department of Energy's information
from 1974 forward. ETDE's Energy Database encompasses worldwide
coverage in the areas of nuclear, coal, and global climate
change information. Access to this comprehensive information is
limited to ETDE member countries.
European Bank for
Reconstruction and Development (EBRD)
Established in 1991 to foster the transition towards
market-oriented economies and to promote private and
entrepreneurial initiative in the central and eastern European
countries, the EBRD now has 60 member countries. The Bank
provides funding for private or privatisable enterprises and for
physical and financial infrastructure projects needed to support
the private sector. Their Web site provides information about
EBRD
environmental policy, projects, and investments including
those specifically targetted towards energy efficiency.
Global Environment Facility (GEF)
Global Environment Facility (GEF) is a program of grants to
assist developing countries to deal with environmental problems
that transcend borders, in four areas: global warming, pollution
of international waters, destruction of biodiversity, and
depletion of the ozone layer. The GEF is jointly implemented by
the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United
Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Bank. A selection of GEF project documents are currently available
online. Links to UNDP and UNEP GEF project documents are in
place as well. Information is being added to this
server as a priority.
Greenhouse Gas
Technology Information Exchange (GREENTIE)
Greentie is an international directory of suppliers whose
technologies and services help to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions. Search the Directory using their new Project Broker
which can put you in direct touch with suppliers or learn more
about how to finance your project.
GREENTIE has also formed a partnership with the UNEP Sustainable
Alternative Network (SANet)
project which encourages uptake of sustainable investment and
complements GREENTIE’s work.
Center for the Analysis and Dissemination of Demonstrated
Energy
Technologies (CADDET)
The Center for the Analysis and Dissemination of Demonstrated
Energy Technologies (CADDET) is responsible for collecting and
disseminating information on demonstrated, energy efficient and
renewable energy technologies. The program focuses on
demonstration projects on full-scale applications of new
technologies.

Research Centre (IDRC)
"The objects of the Centre are to initiate, encourage,
support and conduct research into the developing regions of the
world and into the means for applying and adapting scientific,
technical and other knowledge to the economic and social
advancements of those regions."
The IDRC maintains databases, publications, reports, a
library, and Internet links on topics of importance to the
international development community.
International Finance
Corporation (IFC)
The International Finance Corporation, a member of the World
Bank Group, is the world's largest multilateral source of
financing for private enterprise in emerging economies. Its
mandate is to promote the growth of productive and profitable
private enterprises in its developing member countries. The IFC
Power Division handles electric power generation projects
including hydro, thermal, geothermal, and new technologies, as
well as transmission and distribution projects, including
regional, national, and international grids, and metropolitan
and local utilities.
The Public
Information Center has information on operations for the
World Bank/IDA, IFC, the Global Environmental Fund (GEF), and
the Montreal Protocol. Materials on file includes project
information documents, staff appraisal reports, economic
reports, environmental assessments, Operation Evaluation
Department (OED) Reports, Operational Policies and Bank
